Neutral Elegance!!! June 22, 2017 16:24
"An Interior is the Natural Projection of the Soul."
Have you ever picked a paint color for a room and once it's finished the color isn't what you wanted at all? I think we all have been through that panic feeling of "What do I do now?" Picking paint colors for a room can be a daunting task, especially when you're looking for a neutral color that works with your decor.
Usually we pick neutral shades that are pretty light. We definitely want some color on the wall so that we can show off the beautiful molding and then it can showcase everything else in the room.
Have you ever been in a paint store looking at color swatches and you think you've found the perfect grey, only to get it on your wall and it turns green? Yikes!!! So what are neutral colors? They are colors which are light to medium in shade that coordinate well with other colors. Neutrals can have either cool undertones (blue and green) or warm undertones (red, brown, and yellow). So first you need to figure out if you want cool or warm tones in your room.
When you are choosing the perfect neutral for your room, look at the darkest shade on the swatch because it will tell you what undertones are in the color.
Some of our designers favorite neutrals are:
Whether you're painting your room white, grey, beige, or greige (grey/beige!), you can find the perfect neutral color that suits your taste for your home. You can always get help from a professional designer if making the decision starts to get overwhelming. A designer can help narrow down your choices so you can make a decision. Happy Painting!!!
First Things First: Exterior Lighting June 15, 2017 12:38
We believe that the scale of the home and the roof line determines the size of the exterior lights. Color should coordinate with the roof color and hardware on the front door. Check out some of these great lighting selections from past Laura of Pembroke projects! Shop all exterior lights on our website, here.
Spaces to think about:
Lanterns should be hung as low as possible with clearance for maximum impact.
A new trend in the market is outdoor chandeliers, especially for screened in porches and covered patios. If you still want a breeze in your outdoor space but want that big impact that a chandelier gives, decorative side mount fans that can be hung in the corner of the space to circulate air are a great addition.
Lighting is appropriate over the garage door (given that there is enough room) or on the side of the garage door. This is something that can be planned for in construction. Sometimes placing a lantern in an unexpected area creates a lot of charm. In tight spaces, sometimes you have to get creative with lighting placement!
Back of the home:
This is an important space to have well lit for security purposes, so we suggest placing lanterns on either side of a back door. If you have a poorly lit corner of your house, having a security light that comes on with movement might be a smart idea.
Adding path lighting or post mount fixtures help create a warm glow leading to the entrance of your home.

Style Cheat Sheet June 01, 2017 08:33
"Dressing is a way of life."
-Yves Saint Laurent
As a continuation of the blog post, "The Party is Here", I've been searching the internet for articles of various dress codes that seem to be popping up on party invitations. I decided to gather up all the information from these articles and put together a "cheat sheet" to help you discern what is what when it comes to dressing for a party.
- A business suit or business dress. A dress with a jacket.
-Women should wear a combination of a skirt or dress slacks, blouse, sweater, twinset, jacket (optional) and hosiery(optional) with closed toe shoes.
-If it's a work function, see business casual and leave the jeans, shorts and flip-flops at home. If it's a party with friends, you can go with jeans and flip flops.
-A seasonal look that's a little more than casual. Try a sundress in a bright color with heels/wedges or dressy sandals or a jumpsuit/romper.
-See "Dressy Casual" above. Cynthis Nellis at About Style defines "Smart Casual" as, “dressed-up versions of casual looks.” A knee-length skirt is acceptable as well. Again, avoid shorts, worn and holy jeans, t-shirts, and flip flops for this casual dress code.
Cocktail (aka semiformal)
-A "Little Black Dress" (LBD) and statement jewelry always works for this dress code . Women can wear knee-length skirts or dress pants with a nice sweater or blouse, or go for the classic “little black cocktail dress.” or short dresses that are party-ready.
Garden Attire or Beach Formal
-A maxi dress with flat sandals (no flip-flops) is the perfect option for this up and coming dress code
-If the event is in a barn or on a farm, you really can wear cowboy boots with a dress. Checks are really popular this season, so a cute checked dress would be fun!
- A long gown and heels. If you don't want to invest in a long gown, you can get a way with a very dressy cocktail dress.
Black Tie Optional (aka formal)
-A long or short dress with bold jewelry work well.
-This is the most formal dress code of all and usually pertains to balls and state dinners. So when you're invited to dinner with the President, wear a floor-length evening gown with long gloves.
Creative Black Tie
- You can wear a Formal evening gown, dressy cocktail dress, your dressiest black dress with fun statement jewelry.
- Short cocktail dress in black or color. A long dressy skirt and top or other dressy separates.
So get to that party in style!!!
Show Your Inspiration!!! June 01, 2017 07:58
Everyone wants their home to reflect their personality. If you're traditional, modern, or shabby chic, there is always room for the unexpected. Whether you add color to a neutral palette or you refinish your Grandmother's antique buffet, there's a place for your charm to show thru.
Show some color. It can be in a piece of furniture, art, or a simple throw or pillow. Color adds some magnetism to the room that may fall flat when it is in all neutral colors.
Show your stripes (or dots). Adding some pattern to your room can be whimsical and unique.
Show some shape. Unique shapes and designs are always a welcome addition to any room!
Show some Fur!!! Get cozy with fur covered furniture, ottomans, and pillows.
Whatever your personality, show it in your inspiration!!!
Get Gifting!!! May 25, 2017 08:26
"Happiness does not result in what we get, but from what we give."
- Ben Carson
Now that Summertime is quickly approaching, and the end of school is near, We need to remember to get teacher, wedding, and hostess gifts for the summer soirees. We always think about gift giving for birthdays and holidays, but what about that special teacher in your child's life, or your best friend's daughter's wedding, or even a summer party and you want to take a hostess gift. It's not about how much you spend, but the thought that goes into it, especially if it's someone close to you. Even picking flowers from your garden and giving them to your friend when she invites you to lunch at her home is a kind gesture that is always appreciated.
Show your appreciation for your child's teacher with an end of the year gift. Try to be somewhat creative and if your child can pick out something themselves, that's even better. Teachers love gifts for their classrooms, like books or even supplies that they may have to spend their own money on. If you don't know what they need or want, a gift certificate is always a great idea and you can wrap it up and give to them in a fun mug or something else that might be useful to them. If you know they love chocolate or baked goods you can make them something just for them or for their family. One year I offered to make dinner for the teacher to take home one night and it was greatly appreciated.
Weddings are in full bloom in the summer and most brides and grooms register for their gifts. You can always get them something on their registry, but if you know them well, think out of the box and give them something that truly fits their personality. You can find unique glassware for cocktails and wine. Some have funny sayings on them, or even numbers etched in them so your party guests know which glass is theirs. Add their favorite bottle of wine or whiskey to complete the gift. If they love to cook, get them cool cookware that can go from oven to freezer and looks pretty on the table as well. Great serving pieces are always a good gift and maybe add a cookbook or non- perishable food items to give it a theme.
As the saying goes, giving IS better than receiving!!!
It's Party Season! May 18, 2017 21:31
"Dress Like Coco, Live like Jackie, Act like Audrey, Laugh like Lucy"
The weather is starting to get warmer and your mailbox is getting filled up with invitations for outdoor summer parties, from weddings and graduation parties to barbeques and patio/pool parties. So once you've RSVP'd to all these get togethers, the question becomes "What do I wear?" Don't frett, we've got you covered for that ideal outfit for all your events on your summer calendar.
1. Search for clothes that keep you cool
- For the more casual get togethers, a sundress or romper in fabrics like cotton or rayon will keep you cool on those warm summer days. Find outfits in bright colors or fun patterns to mix it up a bit.
2. Give your LBD the night off
-Go with a classic and chic cocktail dress for a wedding. Try to opt for some color, so you're not blending in with all the "Little Black Dresses." If you must wear black, add bold and colorful jewelry to give it a twist.
3. Wear comfortable shoes
-I don't know about you, but I don't sit much at social events, unless I'm eating. I like wearing heels, but they can be brutal on your feet. Look for wedges and thicker heels so you'll be more comfortable. If you're going casual, instead of throwing on a pair of flip flops, put on a cute pair of flat sandals that will keep you comfortable and look great at the same time.
4. Take along a light sweater or cardigan
- I'm always cold, so I bring along something to keep me warm when the sun goes down or head inside where the air conditioning is on full blast. A summer weight cardigan or sweater in a neutral color is perfect to bring along with you.
So whether you're going to a casual get together or a fancy soiree, make sure you are wearing something you feel good in and of course look great too!
LOP Designer Revelations!!! May 11, 2017 21:49
"Your home should tell the story of who you are, and be a collection of what you love."
Whether you're building a new home, buying a home, or just decorating a room, working with a designer can be an overwhelming and daunting task. I always hear from people that have worked with our designers, Laura and Karen, that they have made the process easy and enjoyable. A lot of people feel they don't have the ability or style to decorate their own home. Everyone has a sense of style in them and I feel our designers really bring out their clients personality in a project.
If you have a design project, big or small, our designers have some tips to make the process as seamless as possible:
1. Establish a budget
This lets your designer know upfront how much you want to spend on a project. So when you fall in love with that very expensive, but perfect chandelier for your space, you can save on the side table that is less expensive and works well in your room.
You don't need to spend a large amount of money when working with our designers. No matter what your budget is for a project, they can help you find and choose ideal pieces.
Our designers will help you find the best quality items that will last thru all the different trends year after year. By choosing quality core pieces, you can still change the look with new pillows, art, or accessories that won't cost you an arm and a leg.
2. Let us know "Who you are."
Start a folder on your computer with pictures of rooms that inspire you. You can find amazing ideas on Pinterest, Houzz, or other design blogs/websites. You can also do it the "old-fashioned" way and tear pictures out of magazines and put in a file folder. Once our designers get to know what you like, they can steer your project to reflect your vision.
Laura finds that she can help clients customize their space when they bring her some of their own ideas of what they like in design. "I see thru people's eyes" which allows her to design a truly tailored look.
3. Incorporate meaningful pieces into your space
You don't have to start from scratch and buy everything new. Our designers find that incorporating heirloom or sentimental pieces into the design give the space a special personality that reflects your taste. A good friend of mine had these beautiful lead glass panels that she saved from the home where she grew up. She just built a new home and had the panels installed in her bar cabinetry. Both of her parents have passed away, but what a nice way to bring a part of her past into the present.
Karen has a way of working with what you have and "coordinating existing pieces with new items." Maybe you have a buffet table that was your grandmothers and it's in good condition, but doesn't really fit in with your design or taste. Maybe a coat of paint will change the whole look and then work perfectly in your dining room. Those pieces tell a story and can be great conversation pieces.
Schedule a consult with Karen and Laura to start your design project!! 330-477-4455.
Chic Peek...Style trends for Spring and Summer!!! May 04, 2017 08:53
"Sometimes all you need is a Splash of Color!"
Well if you haven't guessed it already, COLOR is a top Spring and Summer style trend. Soft color, bold color, any color will do! As Veronica just said, "I can't believe we're selling color after 30 years!" This season is feminine and flirty with prints, ruffles and shoulders exposed. It's a great time for making fashion fun, whether it's a trip to the grocery store or a night out with your special someone. Casual style is chic style and don't forget the bold accessories to finish off your look!
Ruffles are fun, flirty, and feminine. During fashion week, ruffles were seen adorning sleeves, necklines, and skirts. Peplums are ruffles in disguise and have been a popular fashion trend this past year and they are not going anywhere. Sometimes the well placed ruffle can take the place of accessories, like necklaces and bracelets. A ruffled top can dress up a pair of jeans and turn an everyday outfit into a Spring staple.
The little details are big this season too. Pom poms, fringe, lace, and a pop of color are fun ways to ramp up an outfit and turn something simple into something chic and unique.
Cold shoulder, off-the-shoulder trends are back in full force this season
"Sarah Rutson, VP of global buying at Net-a-Porter, confirmed that the cold-shoulder trend is incredibly flattering for all women because everyone's shoulders look great. It's so true—what a beautiful part of the body to show off." (Who What Wear)
Whether you want something casual or a little more dressy this may be the trend for you.
So go Bold this season with some color and flair in your style!!!
Go for the GOLD!!! April 26, 2017 08:36
Anyone can find the dirt in someone. Be the one who finds the GOLD"
Gold is the new neutral in design these days. Gone are the days of keeping golds together and silver/greys together. Today, many designers are mixing the 2 popular tones. Grey is a very soothing color, but it can sometime seem cold. Adding various tones of gold can warm up the space. Gold can really have an impact on a room. It can be used on the wall in a decorative paper, in fixtures in your bathroom, or as an accent color in pillows or accessories.
Gold can update your space and give it an eclectic style. When your room seems drab and needs a pick me up, gold is the perfect accent color to brighten up your space.
Not only does gold pair well with silver and grey, but mix it with Navy or other blue hues as well as white or ivory.
Just like you accessorize your wardrobe with jewelry, you can do the same in your room. Gold adds some sparkle and provides the space with the beauty of rich color and warmth.
Don't forget to look for lighting in gold. You can go traditional or contemporary and find just the look you want for your home!!!
So go for the GOLD the next time you plan on styling a space for your home. It's a happy color and will make you feel right at home.
New Year, New You, New Color! February 20, 2017 07:20
"The best color in the whole world is the one that looks good on you."
The New Year always comes with resolutions, new fad diets, colder weather, but I never knew it also came with a new color. A lot has been said about Pantone's new "Color of the Year", Greenery. Who knew? I have never heard of the "Color of the Year", only "Beige is the New Black" or "Navy is the New Black". I wanted to find out a little bit more about this "New Color of the Year" and this is what I learned:
The Pantone Color Institute has named itself the "Global Color Authority" and Pantone 15-0343 or Greenery (“a yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring.”) is the 2017 Color of the Year!
“We know what kind of world we are living in: one that is very stressful and very tense,“ said Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “This is the color of hopefulness, and of our connection to nature. It speaks to what we call the ‘re’ words: regenerate, refresh, revitalize, renew. Every spring we enter a new cycle and new shoots come from the ground. It is something life affirming to look forward to.”
For the last 17 years, The Pantone Color Institute has chosen a color which represents our "current cultural climate". The chosen color has influenced interior design, fashion, food, travel, and much more. "Greenery" seems very appropriate with our new President, Donald Trump. Green signifies money and he certainly has a lot of it. Also, Green signifies the environment and many designers tout their environmentally-friendly products and designs in both clothing and furniture.
Personally, I like the color green. I'm Irish, so I guess green is part of my being. I have green eyes and my kids' school colors are green and white. Green is the perfect accent color in fashion and decorating.
So in keeping with the "New Year, New You" theme, maybe you can add a little "greenery" to your life. It's a happy, yet calm color and it just makes me smile!
An Attitude of Gratitude!!! November 21, 2016 12:19
"It's not Happy people that are Thankful, it's Thankful people that are Happy!"
Thanksgiving Day is almost upon us and it's always a time to reflect over the past year and be thankful for our blessings in life. It's too bad Thanksgiving only comes once a year, not just because the food is so delicious, but to be surrounded by family and friends and remembering everything we are thankful for everyday.
I think one of my New Year's Resolutions for 2017 will be to show more gratitude to my family and friends and people I come in contact with everyday. I do believe that thankful people are joyful people, and who doesn't want to surround themselves with joyful people?!
Laura of Pembroke would like to wish all of our wonderful customers a wonderful Thanksgiving full of love and laughter with family and friends as well as lots of great food! We definitely are thankful for you and your support this past year.
Happy Turkey Day from our Laura of Pembroke Family to yours!!!
Laura of Pembroke Style Hacks!!! November 14, 2016 16:31
"Forget the rules, if you like it, wear it"
I don't know about you, but "life hacks" are everywhere; on Pinterest, DIY websites, or magazines and catalogs. I used to think "hacks" had a negative connotation, like someone who is not good at their job, or "hacking" someone's computer or national security. There's not a formal definition of "life hacks" in Webster's Dictionary, but I did find an informal definition:
Life-hack: a usually simple and clever tip or technique for accomplishing some familiar task more easily and efficiently.
With that being said, I decided to come up with some Laura of Pembroke Hacks. Ideas for styling your wardrobe or home in an easy, yet fashionable way. So here goes:
LOP Fashion Hacks
LOP Fashion Hack #1 - Get rid of deodorant stains on your clothing by taking the foam from dry cleaning hangars and rubbing it on the stain.
LOP Fashion Hack #2 - Roll up old magazines and put in your tall boots to keep their shape.
LOP Fashion Hack #3 - Accentuate your assets: Great legs, wear shorter hemlines. Great arms, then go sleeveless. Shapely shoulders, wear off the shoulder or cold shoulder tops.
LOP Fashion Hack #4 - We love Peplum tops. Choose a slimmer bottom, like pencil skirt or skinny or narrow jeans.
LOP Fashion Hack #5 - A well-cuffed jean. To show off a great pair of shoes or boots, make a long cuff right at or right above your ankle bone.
(If your jeans are loose fitting, roll your cuff instead of making a large fold).
LOP Fashion Hack #6 - A scarf not only adds function by keeping you warm, but can also add color and pattern to your outfit.
LOP Design Hacks
LOP Design Hack #1 - Add some color to your room by changing out your pillows.
LOP Design Hack #2 - If you're having a holiday party, instead of lighting a fire in the fireplace, Place lighted candles in the fireplace. The look is elegant and the room won't get too warm for your guests.
LOP Design Hack #3 - To make a room look larger add mirrors.
LOP Design Hack #4 - When in doubt, add a large mesh ribbon when decorating for the holidays.
LOP Design Hack #5 - A patterned area rug can add color and texture to a room.
LOP Design Hack #6 - Small side table that are open and tiered add flexibility for storage and can add display space. Smaller round tables are perfect for those difficult corner spaces. they can also double as a nightstand beside your bed.

"Keep Calm and Jingle all the Way!!!"
O.k., I know it's early, but I'm a planner and I like to have all my "elves in a row", so to speak, when it comes to holiday decorating. I probably won't start trimming the tree until after Thanksgiving, but I love seeing what's new in Holiday decorating. I was inspired this week as the Laura of Pembroke crew decorated the store for our annual Holiday Open House this Saturday:
If you have a chance to stop by on Saturday, you'll definitely be in for a treat! So here is Laura of Pembroke's 2016 Holiday Wish List. Hopefully it will inspire you this Holiday Season!

The Holidays will be here before you know it. If you have a plan ahead, decorating your home can be creative and fun. Enjoy the process, then sit back and take in all your hard work with pride!!!
Laura of Pembroke's "Style Icons"!!! October 27, 2016 18:35
"Style is when the outside is as beautiful as the inside."
Who is the first person that comes to mind when you think of a Style Icon? There are so many women, past and present, with great style. When I think of Style Icons, I definitely think of Audrey Hepburn. She was a confident and strong woman. I think she started the "skinny pants" revolution. She always looked so put together in her black turtleneck, skinny jeans, and loafers. She also made pearls a classic staple for every woman's wardrobe.
My favorite modern "Style Icon" is Jennifer Aniston. She always looks put together whether she's casual or red carpet ready.
I asked our Laura of Pembroke fashionistas to name their "Style Icons":
Lauren Bosworth: "My style icon is Grami (aka Veronica Sirpilla) because the way she puts her outfits together everyday amazes me! She is always perfectly accessorized and looks fabulous DAILY. She is great about mixing old and new clothing pieces, and also mixes vintage jewelry pieces with some of her newer costume jewelry, which looks cool! I am lucky to have a Grandma with such timeless style!! Hopefully someday I will be as put together as she is all the time!"
Grami can hang with the "Cool Kids"!!!
Veronica Sirpilla: "Definitely Jackie Kennedy. She was by far the classiest woman ever! I was proud of how she represented the U.S. (Even though a lot of her clothes were from France)."
Laura Bosworth: "Audrey Hepburn - Simple, classic, understated yet always elegant."
Deborah Thomas: "For me, Audrey Hepburn represents timeless elegance, good taste, and class."
Nancy Darrah: "I have to agree with Deborah about Audrey, but I would add Grace Kelly to list as well. Graceful, classic, and elegant."
Debbie McMasters: "I love "Old Hollywood" elegance. For instance, Grace Kelly, Lauren Bacall, Audrey Hepburn, Rita Hayworth, Gene Tierney, Hedy Lamar, and Katherine Hepburn. Ultra Sophistication! That's my two cents!"
Lori Huffstetler: I love all the "Style Icons" from Deborah, Nancy and Debbie...I would add Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. We all love the great classics!
Karen Fehlman: The girls I work with are all my "Style Icons"!!! I love to check out what everyone is wearing every day! Such stylish ladies:)))
Who is your "Style Icon"?
Our Fall Bucket List October 14, 2016 14:42 1 Comment
"A September to remember, an October full of splendor, a November to treasure." - La Prevenchere
It finally feels like fall is here. Gone are the days of 80 degree weather, shorts and sandals. Bring out those chunky sweaters, booties, hot apple cider, and anything pumpkin flavored! So in honor of one of my favorite seasons, I thought it would be fun to come up with a "Fall Bucket List"! Hopefully it will inspire you to come up with your own personalized bucket list.
1. Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, donate to a local charity.
2. Add a pop of "Fall" color with flowers.
3. Have a Fall wine or beer tasting party with your friends.
4. Set a beautiful Autumn Table.
5. Go apple picking. This is the time for crisp sweet apples!
Yesterday, I had the best Honey Crisp Apple from:
6. Cozy up in front of a fire with a cozy fur blanket and good book.
7. Scarf it up! Indulge in a new scarf to keep you warm this Fall.
8. Go to a Pumpkin Patch to pick your pumpkins, then have a pumpkin carving party!
9. Add some SPARKLE to your home with fun pillows.
Why wait for the holidays, when you can do it now!
I stalked my friends' homes and found some awesome topiaries they put together and decorated. I have some very talented friends!
My friend Michelle painted these pumpkins and made these cool topiaries for her front porch.
My friend Janelle did a beautiful job pairing mums, pumpkins, and cabbages to decorate outside her home.
Now that you've checked out Laura of Pembroke's "Fall Bucket List", I hope you can discover yours!! Happy Fall!!!
Confessions from a New York Buying Trip #2!!! October 06, 2016 12:06 1 Comment
"I've been shopping all of my life and still have nothing to wear."
- Every woman ever
If you haven't read the first "Confession of an NYC buying trip", you should! It's definitely a must-read ;). Another buying trip to NYC in September was definitely an adventure. We traveled the day after a bomb went off in Chelsea, and the President was in town with other Heads of State for the UN General Assembly. Needless to say, New York was crazier and more crowded than ever. It was also my big 5-0 birthday weekend, so my sweet niece Lauren planned dinner for us at NoMo in SoHo. If you're looking for a place to go for dinner when in the city, I highly recommend it! The food was delicious and the ambiance was cool and eclectic! Plus, we had a surprise guest, Emily. What a way to celebrate my birthday!!!
This trip was a big one! We were buying for Spring and early Summer. The show is called Coterie and is held at the Javitz Center. Imagine any convention center you've ever been to and then imagine it on steroids!
If you want to be on trend for 2017, off-the-shoulder and cold-shoulder tops and dresses are still going to be the style of the Spring and Summer season. It's great for those of us that don't want to show our arms, but are still comfortable with bare shoulders. Plus it's great for younger girls as well.
As you can see, Lauren (in the pink off the shoulder top) was trending at Coterie. People actually stopped her to compliment her on her top. She definitely had it going on. It made the rest of us feel really bad about ourselves because no one commented on what we were wearing. Of course we were all in black! I thought we all look pretty cute too! Just kidding! It was pretty comical because we just waited for people to say something about how cute she looked... and she did!
It's always fun to spot someone famous when in NYC. While we were perusing the Alexis Bittar goodies, fashion icon, Iris Apfel (also an Alexis Bittar spokes model) stopped by to look at a few things herself. Can you believe that she is 95 years old? She really is something!
We were busy all day with appointments with our established fashion vendors: Ted Baker, Bailey 44, Comfy, Planet, Nicole Miller, Ella Moss, Splendid. We have some great things coming in 2017. We also found some new vendors as well to keep things fresh and new in the store.
At the end of our long day, we had an appointment at Hudson Jeans. They were having a party. They set up a showroom as well as a lounge area with food and drink. Fun, loud music was playing and the atmosphere was lively and entertaining. They even had "bouncers" to let you in the lounge area. Hudson Jeans was a nice way to end a long day!
On day 3, we had appointments at Kate Spade New York and Eileen Fisher. We went to their showrooms in Manhattan. Both are very impressive. Kate Spade New York always has a fun theme that follows through clothing, purses, and jewelry. The spring season takes you on a journey through Morocco and North Africa. It's nice to break up our trip and leave the large convention center and venture out into the fashion world of New York City.
Until next time NYC - Peace out!!!
September is for Staging Spaces! September 27, 2016 17:39
"Simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication" - Leonardo Da Vinci
This month Laura of Pembroke been busy decorating the entranceway and foyer of The Akron Junior League ShowHouse and the Helen Scott Custom Builders Parade of Homes at Kings Ridge in Green, Ohio. It's always fun to start with a blank space and transform it into a beautiful room. Of course we would love to appeal to everyone's decorating tastes or styles, but unfortunately it rarely works out that way. So we did our best to showcase these two homes and I must say they look awesome!
We decorated the entrance way and the foyer of the Akron Junior League ShowHouse.
We wanted to stay true to the style of the house and I think we definitely achieved the look we wanted for the ShowHouse.
Here are some before pics:
We started with a beautiful console that fit in beautifully
with the style of the home.
Then topped it off with some fabulous accessories...
We added a beautiful crystal chandelier and lighting!
Then filled in with some charming pieces in the corners...
The entrance was a welcoming space to start off the tour of
The Helen Scott Custom Builders Parade home was a big project. We furnished and fully decorated the great room, dining, and master bedroom and providing all the lighting for the home. We accented two other bedrooms, master bath, guest bath, laundry and kitchen. To see the empty rooms come alive with personality was so rewarding especially knowing the hard work and time spent on picking out the right pieces for each room.
Normally when we work with a client, we follow their lead and try to capture their style and personality when picking out furniture and accessories. A parade home is much different. The builder gives some direction, but it is our responsibility to make the home as inviting and appealing to as many people as possible. We are selling Laura of Pembroke, but also want the home to look the best it can for the majority of people touring it, so the builder can sell it and hopefully find other clients who will use them to build their next home. So let's take a tour!
This is just a peak into the Helen Scott Custom Builder Home. Hopefully you've gotten a taste of what Laura of Pembroke is all about and stop in and see us sometime!

(Breaking) Fashion Rules!!! September 15, 2016 07:17
"It's a new era in fashion - there are no rules." - Alexander McQueen
A question that may be on everyone's mind this time of year is, "Can I wear white after Labor Day?" I can remember my mom always telling me that I could only wear white after Memorial Day and then put it away after Labor Day. Why is this silly precedent still in question? I decided to look into the history behind the "No White after Labor Day" edict.
Interestingly enough, this rule dates back to the early 1900's. In the era when high society would leave their homes in the city on Memorial Day and summer in the mountains or at the beach (well, I guess this still happens in certain circles), they would also swap their darker, heavier fabrics for their summer whites or lighter clothes. The rule was established to allow the high society folk to distinguished themselves from the lower class. Only the rich and famous could afford switching out their wardrobe for the various seasons. Seems crazy, doesn't it!? The fact that this "Fashion Rule" is still in question is silly. Actually, Coco Chanel wore white year round, so go ahead and wear white whenever you feel like it, but maybe keep the white sandals at home!
White jeans and jacket!
Go ahead and break the rules!!!

Get Illuminated with Chandeliers!!! August 29, 2016 17:08
"Be faithful to your own taste because nothing you really like is ever out of style"
Billy Baldwin (Interior designer, not actor ;))
Chandeliers aren't just for stuffy dining rooms anymore! The right chandelier not only provides ambiance to a space, but it adds to the decor and can be a great conversation piece. Chandeliers come in all shapes and sizes as well as various materials. Personally, I love a crystal chandelier in a less formal space for a more eclectic look. Pendant lights are also a great way to add form and function above a countertop, sink, or a smaller area. A chandelier can be the perfect light in your home, from your dining room to your master bathroom.
It's important to choose the right scale of chandelier for your space. You want to consider the size of the room, size of the chandelier, amount of light it radiates, and where to place in the room. Once you've figured out these details, you can have fun choosing from all the unique and interesting lights available to you.
This smoke crystal chandelier with string shade looks different in these three spaces. The first picture shows the piece in our showroom. You'll notice that the second picture shows the chandelier with the cylindrical shade, while the 3rd picture the shade has been removed. Same chandelier yet different looks for your taste.
We love this star pendant! It works so well in a smaller space and the gives the area additional personality. Staggering the 4 star pendants in the first picture is an alternative to one larger chandelier in that foyer.
The juxtaposition of the crystal chandeliers above the island and the steel barstools give this kitchen an eclectic look.
This kitchen boast 3 pendant lights which give the space a casual yet elegant feel.
These crystal pendants are perfect for illuminating the hallway, while not overwhelming to the space.
Gotta love these globe pendants. We love putting together a group of pendants like in this bathroom. You can see that there is a globe over each sink to give plenty of light if you need to touch up your makeup. These pendants are not your typical builder-grade pendants. Step out of the box and have fun with your lighting options!
Orb chandeliers are beautiful, sculptural pieces of light that can soften the hard lines in a room with it's round shape. There are so many styles of these chandeliers from shiny silver to a wooden chandelier with an antique finish. The darker finish on this chandelier gives contrast to the white ceilings and upholstery in this dining space.
Ok, now it's time to have some fun! Why not use these beautiful cascading chandeliers alone or in a group to make a statement! Scale is used in both of these rooms. A group of chandeliers are used in this great room to compliment the colors used in the furniture for a modern yet sophisticated look. The large cascading chandelier is grand yet stylish for this dining space.
These stripe pendant chandeliers are great alone or group them together for a bold statement in this amazing living room. Love the tonal vision of this room with the white sofas complimented by the 3 white silver stripe pendants. The room is elegant and chic and lends itself to a NYC sophistication.
To Buy or Not to Buy... A Sectional!!! August 11, 2016 10:37
We’ve all been there. We need to buy a new sofa or sectional. What to do, what to do? My home has 2 sectionals and our family loves them. One is a huge oversized, cozy sectional in our basement. You can literally fit 4 grown boys on it in the sleeping position. Our other one isn’t quite as big, but our family of 5 and a friend fit quite comfortably on it. Sounds like I’m a little biased to the sectional, so that’s why this week’s blog is devoted to “Sectional Seating”.
The great thing about a sectional is they can be as big or small as you need for your room. It can be a large great room or a small family room and you can find the size and configuration that suits your needs. If it’s a room for watching TV, a sectional consisting of a chaise is a great option. We included an ottoman with our sectional because who doesn’t want to put their feet up while watching TV?
Sectionals really define a room well. They are casual rather than formal and what better way for family to gather together to watch movies where you want to be close to each other or even snuggle. Don’t forget the “Big Game” where friends gather together to watch their favorite team win the championship! (Go Cavs!)
If you like to change you room around a lot, a sectional may not be the best option for you. A sofa and 2 chairs may be the better choice. If you’ve decided that a sectional is the way to go, make sure to choose one that’s comfortable, stylish, and functional for the room. Check out the different sectionals below:

Confessions from a New York City Buying Trip!!! August 04, 2016 15:41 1 Comment
About 4 times a year, a few of us will travel to New York City for a “Buying Trip”. It sounds glamorous, I know. To tell you the truth, it is glamorous, but it’s also a lot of work and a lot of hours spent scouring booths to bring back the best “finds” for are customers. It’s a little bit of seeing into the future and figuring out what trends our customers will find they can’t live without. Sometimes we hit the nail on the head, while other times are a “what were we thinking” moment!
This week Lauren and Veronica went off to NYC to buy for the “Holiday” (November and December) and “Resort” (January and February) seasons. There were 6 shows in one at the Javits Center…
Intermezzo and Accessory Circuit
The Accessories Show
Needless to say, they were very busy for 2 days. Believe it or not, this show isn’t even the one of the biggest for us. In September, we buy for the spring season at Coterie and in February we buy for the fall season.
This is a typical day at the show…
Lauren and Veronica stayed around the Time Square area, which is a short cab ride to the Javits Center. This time they stayed at The Royalton.
9AM the show opens, they go and grab a quick breakfast and coffee inside the show and then start walking the aisles. They cover the show wall to wall to make sure they see EVERYTHING and usually pick up a few new lines by spotting something they really like! (for example... the denim dress... they saw by just walking by and then stopped to look at the line... and ordered it!)
Sometimes they have set appointments with the reps of our more popular lines. Lauren and Veronica worked their days around these appointments. They had an appointment with Bailey 44, Sunday at 12:00pm. At 2:00 pm they met with the Nicole Miller rep. Then they squeeze all of their other lines in around the appointments.
They will usually break for lunch around noon, and then keep shopping until the show closes around 5 or 6. Catching a cab can be difficult with thousands of people leaving the convention center all at once!! Uber helps!
Like last year, denim is HOT. There was even more denim than last year.
Veronica was “ON THE HUNT” for a denim purse. She would go into every vendor and ask them if they carried one. Unfortunately she didn't find the PERFECT denim purse.
Off the shoulder or cold shoulder is trending again this coming season. basically get ready to show your shoulders! Lol
Look who's trending now?!
It can be difficult to buy for the Resort season. The states that have a warmer climate can buy anything that the vendors are showing for the season. Unfortunately for us, January and February are SNOW months so we are still stocking up on sweaters and warm clothing!!! Veronica says resort used to be a big season because people would buy resort clothes or "cruise wear" to take to Forida or on Vacation. Now, people like to "buy now, wear now" and don't shop for warm weather clothes in the winter as much so we don't buy as much resort wear!!
The biggest question we ask on a buying trip is “Where are we going to go for dinner?” No lie! Veronica loves to research the HOT restaurants and she usually is right on the mark! This trip, Lauren and Veronica hit The Polo Bar. Veronica loves Ralph Lauren, so it was definitely a must on their dinner list!
Hopefully this gives you an insider's view of a Laura of Pembroke buying trip to New York City! We’ll be heading to Coterie in September and we’ll give you all the scoop on “What’s HOT” for Spring 2017.
One “Little Black Dress”, Endless Style!!! July 28, 2016 05:00
“One is never over- or under-dressed with a little black dress.”
Who doesn’t have at least 1 “Little Black Dress” in their closet. As much as we may want to step out of the “LBD” box, this classic dress is versatile, one that can be worn day or night, at the office or date night. Accessorizing is the easiest way to change the look or style of your “LBD”. Great jewelry, shoes, purses, etc. can go a long and inexpensive way to change up your look in the snap of a clasp. Black is always classic and easy to build on with layers. Add a sweater or jacket and you’ve just taken it from summer to fall. Check out the different ideas we’ve used to style the same black dress and then use your imagination to come up with your own unique style. We’d love to see what you come up with as well. Please share any pics with us and we will try to feature your unique style.
This style is perfect for the office with pearls, black 2” heels, and a classic purse. After a long day, meet your husband or girlfriends for a drinks and dinner.
A classic white blouse is a must-have in everyone’s wardrobe. Worn under this dress makes this look perfect for the workplace. A timeless black purse is versatile and stylish. Understated silver necklace and 2” heels complete the look.
For a more casual look at work or out and about town, you can wear your blouse as a jacket or tie the front for a relaxed look. Add some comfortable espadrilles to finish the look.
Have a day all to your self or meeting girlfriends for a fun day of shopping? Throw on some strappy sandals, metallic flip flops, add a hat or belt and you have 2 more distinctive looks. Don’t leave the house without jewelry and your purse!
It’s always cold in restaurants, stores and galleries. Make sure to always have a sweater or jacket at the ready so you’re not cold indoors. This white, light bomber is perfectly paired with a straw purse and metallic flats. You’ll be comfortable and stylish. When it gets colder outside, change over to a feminine leather bomber and leather booties or high boots for a more edgy look. Don’t forget to change your purse too.
Gotta love the boyfriend sweater! It’s long and cozy and not just for sweats and jeans anymore. Add a cross-body purse and fun shoes and your ready for the day!
Whether it’s a cocktail party or wedding celebration, you can never go wrong with slipping on your “LBD”, adding a chunky necklace and patent heels and purse. Always classic!!!
This look is sophisticated and feminine. The long jacket can be worn to ward of the chill of the air. Take it off and your style has taken you from day to night. Heels are a must in every girl’s wardrobe. Invest in different heights and styles for additional looks and comfort.
Like the white blouse, your closet should own a jean jacket. It makes a casual seem chic with the right accessories. Whether it’s a necklace or scarf, you can be playful with color. Shoes will finish off your look. We’ve chosen a pair of sequin tennis, strappy espadrilles, and short black booties. A wedge shoe could also work well with this look.
